Campuses aren't immune to bullying but programs like Hey Dude, Nice Shoes help counter it. Carolyn Jennings Brown launched her K-12 program two decades ago and has been visiting schools throughout Texas to share unique stories and experiences to empower students and enlighten parents. She will be our guest speaker on October 13 and speak to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.
To say September was a busy month is an understatement. Here are just a handful of highlights.
Our Big GoalOne of the big wins out of September was identifying our fundraising goal. This is an important step and provides all of us with a goal. The campus courtyard is a wonderful space where students gather to socialize, read, find serenity, and enjoy a meal. However, despite its uses it is overrun with weeds, landscape that needs to be removed and replaced, an abandoned garden, and faded paint which used to be art from promising student artists. With the help of our membership and an entire community, we want to revitalize the space and show off its full potential. The Courtyard TodayNext Steps and How to Get InvolvedOur next step is to identify a budget, courtyard committee, and begin planning so we can get to work. No team is too big. School started just a few weeks ago and before we knew it we were off and running. It was important to us to kick off this school year with enthusiasm and energy, and set the tone for what lies ahead. We organized a huge balloon arch and thanks to RMS administrators who rolled out the red carpet for our star students. To treated our amazing RMS faculty to a delicious spread of Chick-fil-A, everyone's favorite, and dessert thanks to a generous donation from Nothing Bundt Cakes in Frisco and Prosper. Additionally, filled the fridge and stocked snacks in the teacher lounge to keep them energized. The soaring temperatures called for a cool off. Insert the Snowball Express shaved ice truck. It was a hit! Kids lined up after school to purchase and dress up their snow cone. It was so popular, we're bringing it back in September. With volleyball season here, we opened up the concessions stand for the first time in a year. Be sure to visit us across from the RMS gym during a game and snack on candy and other treats. Again, all proceeds go to Roach PTA and helping us with our campus improvement goal. Finally, we can't forget the overwhelming support of our community and those who joined PTA just weeks into the school year. We have exceeded last years members and we're well on our way to a 3-year high. If you'd like to support RMS students, we encourage you to become a Roach PTA member by visiting https://joinpta.org. Select Frisco ISD and Roach Middle School from the dropdown menu. National PTA awarded Roach Middle School PTA with their School of Excellence Award in August 2021. This distinct title comes after investing two years in a stringent program. As part of the application process, families are surveyed and results are used to close educational gaps and improve the partnership between schools and families.
Roach Middle School is proud to be a recipient of the award, earned under the leadership of president Andrea McKoy and a talented board of officers as well as Roach Middle School principal Mrs. Natasha McDonald who all served during an unpredictable climate caused by Covid. On earning this important recognition, McKoy remarked, “Although we may not do everything perfectly, we make sure to do it in excellence! Thank you to the Roach Middle School administration, teachers, and parents for your continued support of the Roach PTA. It's because of your participation and partnership these past two unprecedented years that we were able to obtain such a prestigious award.” The National School of Excellence Award distinguishes Roach Middle School and shows the value and harmony that can be achieved when working with your campus and community. Roach Middle School PTA launched the school year early by attending the annual Texas PTA LAUNCH Conference held at Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine. This 3-day intense workshop helps new and returning board officers prepare for the upcoming school year with informational insight from Texas PTA guest speakers, developmental curriculum and courses, and showcases from exhibitors.
Your Roach Middle School PTA officers attended courses across treasury, community partnership, fundraising, and campus programs in an effort to make the 2021-2022 a stellar year and it did not disappoint. After returning the from the conference, officers buckled down and held their second executive board meeting to incorporate many of their learnings into the school calendar and we look forward to bringing these ideas to you in our first general PTA meeting.
